As Stannis was ostensibly rebelling against the crown, his claim to the title was disputed by the incumbent King Joffrey Baratheon, who as Robert's legal son (his actual status as a bastard with no Baratheon blood notwithstanding) also claimed the title.
Following Renly's death, Stannis took Storm's End as his own, making him the Lord of Storm's End.
Before Robert, his father Steffon Baratheon was Lord of Storm's End.ĭuring the War of the Five Kings, the red priestess Melisandre uses her magic to create a shadow to kill King Renly. Stannis was named Lord of Dragonstone instead, giving him control of the traditional seat of the Targaryen heirs. This has left Stannis Baratheon with issues of resentment towards Robert since he feels as though he should have been the Lord of Storm's End as Renly's older brother. Aegon Targaryen sent his bastard brother Orys Baratheon to secure the Stormlands, making him the first Lord of Storm's End.įormer holder Robert Baratheon passed the title to his infant brother, Renly Baratheon after he became the King of the Andals and the First Men following Robert's Rebellion. Gendry says to Davos he’s been training himself, so I think they’re both pretty handy when it comes to battle.The Stormlands were originally a sovereign nation known as The Storm Kingdom until Aegon the Conqueror arrived in Westeros and formed the Seven Kingdoms. It certainly wouldn’t be one to be messed with. He’s spent the majority of his life in Flea Bottom with the peasants, right? What manners? So this is all kind of new for him, but there’s an element certainly from Gendry’s point of view he senses a bit of a kindred spirit, and I think it’d be really interesting to see what Jon and Gendry could do as a team. I think also there’s something about seeing what Jon Snow has managed to do, and the respect that he has, and how he’s been able to transcend the label of bastard, him being King in the North, I think Gendry really looks up to, and he’s also got to bear in mind that he’s a king and there’s certain etiquette that you have to respect, which I don’t think Gendry is that familiar with. Gendry probably feels that he might after many, many years, finally meet someone he has common ground with, both being bastards and the confused identity that goes with that. He’s obviously heard about Jon Snow, King in the North. There is a bond there, and I hope they get to cross paths again at some point. I’m filling in my own blanks here, but I don’t imagine that Gendry ever felt that he’d been trusted like that before by anybody, and maybe the first time in his life that he was given real purpose ― the purpose being to keep a secret ― but he’s like, “Oh, someone actually trusted me with a task that’s really fucking important,” and the fact that interacting with highborns is something Gendry’s never done before, so it was almost the beginning of opening his eyes, and being conscious that there is much more out there than what he has known his entire life. Then Arya trusting Gendry with the information that she was who she was. I think Gendry really reminded Arya of her brothers back up in Winterfell, who she was missing greatly. I think they crossed paths at that time where they were both searching for something, and they kind of found it in each other a little bit. I have no idea what it would be like, but I think they must carry some torch for each other. These things are all happening at quite formative ages, so I think it’d be great to see them cross paths again. His experience with Melisandre, as you’ll see later in this season, is still something that rankles with him, something that he’s maybe not quite able to get over in his mind. As well, we don’t know what might have happened to Gendry in intervening periods.
